Biography of Swami Vivekananda



 The original name of Vivekananda, also known as Swami Vivekananda, is Narendranath Datta. Western and Indian culture had an impact on him. He had often been exposed to Christianity and Hinduism's worship of gods, contrary to his beliefs. That's before he became a monk and accepted Ramakrishna as his teacher. In addition to his knowledge of culture, he has been respected and recognized as an advocate for intercultural understanding.

 About Swami Vivekananda, born as Narendranath Datta on 12 January 1863 in Calcutta, now known as Kolkata, India, to his father Vishwanath Datta and mother Bhunia Devi. Swami Vivekananda's birthday is celebrated as a national youth day when he was later considered a patriotic saint. His grandfather was a Sanskrit and Persian Scholar, his father was an attorney in the high court and his mother was a homemaker and had a religious temperament. Swami Vivekananda was raised in an upper class middle class family. His parents' progressive, rational and religious approaches to life have shaped his personality and outlook. He's always been interested in spiritualism and meditation and prayer before the Hindu gods since he was a kid.

 With his entry into spirituality, Swami Vivekananda had an interesting journey. He's been an excellent student. He's been studying everything he cares about, be it philosophy, science, history, religion and literature. He'd read every kind of religious text, such as the Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Upanishads and Vedas.

 At 10 when his family moved back to his birthplace after living in Raipur for 2 years he gave an entrance exam for Presidency College. He's the one student who got 1st division grades. He's been an allrounder, trained in Indian classical music, and a very active participant in sports as well as organized events. His intelligence was not just in books but applied in real life and this showed when he traveled abroad. He never dismissed the western way of materialistic life rather infused his knowledge of the western world into traditional teachings.


 He rebelled against the caste differences that were prevalent and deeply rooted in Asian culture, as a result of his belief in Western philosophy. In 1884, when Borah Samaj was founded in 1828 to adopt Christian practices, Swami Vivekananda became a member of the Society and this allowed him to take part in social reforms. He was determined to challenge the ideas of society by spreading the importance of education among women and the lower caste and eliminating illiteracy and child marriage. He was also actively working from 1881-1884 with Band Of Hope that helped youth step into the light and stay away from harmful habits like smoking and drinking.

 During this period in his early 20’s, he first met Ramakrishna in He detested the practices of Ramakrishna who prayed before the deity of a Hindu Goddess, Kaali. He'd always questioned the form of God, and because of his Western influence, he'd argued that God was a formless being. When his father passed away in 1884, he was faced with a sudden reality of having to pay off lots of debts inherited from him. He had visited Ramakrishna more often during this period, and he had been able to understand his belief system, which demonstrated the unity of all religions. Swami Vivekananda renounced all worldly possessions at the age of 25 so that he could truly understand God. After the death of his Guru in 1886, he became the leader.

 After the death of his guru, the trustees withdrew funding and many disciples gave up the practice and went on to live the homely life whereas Swami Vivekananda was determined to build the place into a monastery and there they sat in meditation for several hours and went on with such religious practices. 2 years later from 1888-1893 he traveled extensively in India carrying only a pot, and 2 books namely the Bhagavad Gita and The Imitation of Christ. By living with many scholars and kings of all religions, he'd lived off alms that he could have acquired and become acquainted with people.

 He'd been an open minded man, whose sublime message in all his teachings was nationalism. He's spreading the knowledge of yoga and all forms that are referred to in Patanjali's texts. He'd accompanied Jamsetji Tata on his travels, and had inspired him to set up an educational institution focused on research.

Swami Vivekananda Death

 Swami Vivekananda died in a state of meditation on 4 July 1902, after living his life as usual, teaching his followers, and discussing his teachings with the Vedic scholars. He went to meditate and breathe his last in a room of Ramakrishna Math, the monastery he'd built for his Guru. His followers believed the cause of death to be the rupture of a blood vessel in his brain that happens when one attains nirvana, When the 7th Chakra, which is the crown chakra located in the head, becomes open and then attains maha samadhi while being meditated, that's a very high form of spiritual enlightenment. The time of his death was 9:20 pm. On the banks of the Ganga against his Guru, he was cremated in a sandalwood cremation pyre.
